3 teams of doctors

16 releases in six days

I · The ward

Duties, planned fairly

Neonat is built for one neonatology ward. Its doctors work in three teams, interns, residents and general practitioners, with professors alongside them.

The ward's night duties have to be planned around an emergency rota that comes from outside the ward, and shared fairly between the doctors, month after month. Neonat started as the tool for that, and grew into the ward's shared workspace.

II · What I made

A planner, then a workspace

Designed and built in full, on the web and as a native iPhone and iPad app:

  1. The duty planner: proposals for the month, explained, with swaps between doctors.
  2. The ward's beds, as a floor plan.
  3. Tasks, tied to a patient or a bed, with reminders.
  4. Discharge reports, prepared from the stay's records.
  5. An admission helper, a medical dictionary and a dose calculator.
  6. An assistant that can find and prepare changes, which a person then confirms.

III · The duty planner

A month that explains itself

The planner proposes several different months that respect every rule of the ward, and explains why each doctor is on each night. When no month can satisfy every rule, it says which one breaks and what would have to change.

Each doctor's share of duties is counted from the day they joined. Doctors can swap nights within their team without asking, as long as no rule breaks.

IV · Tasks

The notebook, replaced

Tasks replace the ward's paper notebook: tied to a patient or a bed, urgent or due at a time, repeating if needed. A reminder can be marked done or postponed from the notification itself.

V · Discharges

Discharge reports

Sorties prepares a baby's discharge report. The doctor picks the baby, adds the sources, an export from the hospital's records, photos, notes or dictation, and the report is drafted from them. A report in progress is visible only to the doctor who started it.

VI · The workspace

The ward's day, in one place

Around the planner, the rest of the ward's day: who is on duty and what is due, the beds as a floor plan, each doctor's duties over time, and the constraints set before a month is planned.

VII · Web and iPhone

Never “iOS later”

Every feature exists on the web and on the iPhone, built together. On the iPhone, the app adds widgets for the next duty and the week, a live view during a duty on the lock screen, and Face ID.

Fig. 7. The native iPhone app: Aujourd’hui, then Planning, Statistiques and Tâches, ending on an opened task.

VIII · Privacy

Health data, handled with care

Accounts are by invitation only. The lock screen never shows what a task says. The dose calculator follows the ward's own spreadsheet, and no AI ever computes a dose. Where a feature sends anything to an AI model, that was decided case by case and written down.

IX · Where it stands
